Corso Garibaldi
Corso Garibaldi is the backbone of Brindisi: the main axis linking the harbour to the inland, telling two thousand years of history without ever raising its voice.
A street of a united Italy
The avenue was reworked in the 19th century, when a united Italy wished to give the southern cities a modern, middle-class face; the name itself recalls the Risorgimento. But beneath the paving sleep Roman, medieval and Aragonese layers.
The rhythm of the palaces
The façades of local limestone, the decorated portals, the wrought-iron balconies and the ground-floor shops create an urban rhythm that is both monumental and everyday, something sober and maritime. Sailors landing after months at sea are said to have walked this axis in search of a fixed point: the avenue was that point, where the city showed itself in its finest clothes.
