Lungomare Regina Margherita

The Regina Margherita seafront follows the inner shore of the harbour: a nineteenth-century promenade looking out over that stag’s-antler shape that gave Brindisi its name.

Rome’s gateway to the East

Here Roman triremes laden with goods from the East came ashore, once the Appian Way found its terminus in Brindisi. This was no ordinary port: it was the Empire’s gateway to the East, the point where the known world ended and the unknown began.

A Liberty-style promenade

Dedicated to Queen Margherita of Savoy, the promenade was conceived to make the most of this frontage: Liberty and neoclassical buildings look at the water with composure, and the pale limestone catches the morning sun. On the opposite shore stood medieval Brindisi, where Frederick II reinforced the defences and from which crusaders set sail for the Holy Land. It is the same sea that Virgil saw last, arriving weary from Greece in 19 BC.
