Palazzo Balsamo
Palazzo Balsamo is one of those places where Brindisi reveals itself without noise: an aristocratic residence in the old town, with the elegant discretion of those who have a long history and no need to shout it.
The age of rebuilding
Between the 17th and 18th centuries, after the earthquakes that had reshaped the city, Brindisi’s aristocratic families built their stately residences. The Balsamo had made their fortune on nearness to the harbour: to own a palace in the centre meant taking part in the heart of trade and local power.
Brindisi’s restrained Baroque
The portal concentrates the message of power and refinement, but the local limestone is worked with a restraint that characterises Brindisi Baroque: no twisting columns or flying angels, just studied proportions and precise mouldings, the balance of a city of merchants and seafarers, used to sizing things up with a practical eye.
