Palazzo Granafei-Nervegna

Palazzo Granafei-Nervegna is one of the finest Renaissance buildings in the Adriatic south: a 16th-century residence that, in the heart of the old town, tells four centuries of aristocratic Brindisi history.

The families of power

In the 16th century the great houses of the Terra d’Otranto competed with palaces as much as with swords. The Granafei (powerful and cultured, well connected in the Aragonese and later Spanish networks of the Kingdom of Naples) wanted a residence that commanded respect. The palace later passed to the Nervegna, who carried on its prestige and care through the centuries.

Discreet elegance, not Baroque

The portal reveals the building’s character: a round arch framed by finely worked pilasters, with capitals that join Renaissance rigour to Apulian decorative fancy. Here the taste is restrained, almost austere, the discreet elegance of a port city. Today the palace is municipal property: it hosts exhibitions and the original capital of the Roman column, a record of everyone’s history.
