Port of Brindisi

The port of Brindisi is an extraordinary caprice of nature: two deep inlets opening from the coast like a stag’s antlers. From this shape comes, in Oscan-Messapian, the very name of the city.

The terminus of the Roman world

This natural basin was the reason Rome chose Brindisi as the end of the Appian Way, the Regina Viarum. Those leaving for Greece, the East or Egypt embarked from these waters: merchants, legionaries, philosophers, emperors. In 19 BC Virgil too, returning from Greece with the unfinished Aeneid, spent his last days here.

From the crusades to the Arsenal

In 1096 Bohemond of Hauteville set sail for the First Crusade from one of the ports of this coast. In modern times too the port kept its centrality: the Navy Arsenal, in the nineteenth century, was one of the largest naval complexes in Italy. For two thousand years every ship that crossed these waters carried a piece of history with it.
